Configuration Scope

The term "configuration" is somewhat of an overloaded one in GeoServer. The term configuration really means two types of metadata:

  1. Metadata which controls how GeoServer web services such as WMS,WFS, and WCS behave
  2. Metadata which describes the data served by GeoServer

In terms of the current GeoServer configuration system this maps to:

  1. services.xml
  2. catalog.xml and the GeoServer data directory

Number 2 can generally be considered to be a "Catalog" for GeoServer.
