Plugin Services
Most successful open source projects make use of some kind of plugin structure, this allows the project to take on new contributions in a safe and controlled manner. Even with a GPL framework, the pluging interfaces can be LGPL to allow for commerical contribution etc...
Geoserver is certaintly moving in this direction, but it would be great to think a little bit more and come at a framework we could all take advantage of.
