Windows Installer Setup Guide

1) Installing a Java Development Kit

  1. Download the Java JDK version (the latest version at the time of this writing is 1.6 aka "Java 6"): http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  2. Run the executable file you downloaded.
  3. Accept the license agreement and click Next.
  4. On the Custom Setup screen:
    1. Disable the Public Java Runtime Environment.
    2. Select your installation directory.
    3. Click Next
  5. Click Finish once installation is complete.

2) Download GeoServer

Head to the Downloadpage and grab the latest executable (.exe) version of GeoServer.

3) Run the Installer

Double click on the GeoServer executable that you just downloaded.

1) The following dialog asks you to ensure you have the needed JAVA_HOME environment variable (You may have to set this variable manually.  The directions for this are forthcoming.)  If you would like it to use a different Java version that you have installed, then cancel the installer and set JAVA_HOMEto the home directory of the version you'd like to use. If it can not find an appropriate version of a Java JDK to use it will warn you.

2) Read the GPL license and click I Agree:

3) Choose your install location and click Next.  You can leave this in the default directory or change as you would like:

4) The next page asks you where your data directory is. If this is your first time installing, just hit next. If you have a previous version of GeoServer and you want to use your existing data directory, enter the path to that data directory.
5) Choose the name of the Start Menu folder and click Install.  Again, usually this can be left to its default values.

On completion short cuts will appear in the Windows Start menu.

4) Start GeoServer

To start GeoServer (using the included Jetty servlet container), locate your GeoServer installation in the Start menu and select Start GeoServer.  If you are using Windows Vista, you must start the server as administrator (Right click and choose from the context menu).  A console window will persist.  This is normal and can be ignored, or can be used for debugging. To stop the server, select Stop Geoserver from the Start Menu or by closing the console window that is open, or by hitting Ctrl-C in the console window.
After startup, the administration interface should be available through the GeoServer Administration link in the Start Menu or by pointing your web browser to http://localhost:8080/geoserver .)
